Zen Fine Chinese Cuisine - Best Chinese Food Outside China

Today, I am blogging about the “Best Chinese Food Outside of China” … well, that was according to Jennifer 8 Lee. Jennifer is a reporter for New York Times who had just published a booked called “The Fortune Cookie Chronicles: Adventures in the World of Chinese Food”.

In writing the book, she visited restaurants in 42 states in the US and other 23 countries in search for Chinese food. When she landed in Vancouver, she went to three restaurants … Kirin, Sun Sui Wah and Zen. Out of the many restaurants, she chose to describe Zen as the greatest.

Roasted Pork Feet Porridge

Making porridge is very simple. Bring a big pot of water to a boil. Add about 2 cups of rice (rice measuring cup). I added a large piece of ginger to the porridge for flavouring. I also added a teaspoon of salt and sometimes I will add two teaspoons of oil. But if I’m making porridge with roasted pork feet, I will leave out the oil. Add the roasted pork feet and let it boil until it reduces to the consistency you prefer. It normally takes about 45 minutes to an hour to cook porridge.

Oyster Jade Boat

Selena made a finger food called the Oyster Jade Boat. This is a great finger food which can be served on Japanese cucumber which is what Selena used, celery or iceberg lettuce or any kind of vegetable which can be eaten raw and has the shape which can hold some filing.

Betty showed us how to make Chinese New Year Cake, the baked version. The baked version takes much lesser time than the steamed version. Betty made two different flavours of the baked Chinese New Year Cake.

Hokkien Mee

During the Chinese New Year gathering as featured in the Yee Sang blog, I learned how to make Hokkien Mee from Jessica, the host of the gathering. Hokkien Mee is a very much missed noodle dish from Malaysia. Jessica made some very nice Hokkien Mee and she always gets requests from this group of Malaysian/Singaporean friends to make this dish during our gatherings.

Volunteering for Food For All Dialogue

The Richmond Food Security Task Force hosted the first Food For All Dialogue at the Gilmore Park Church on 29th February and 1st March 2008. This two day session is to create stimulating conversation between guest speakers, professionals and Richmond residents on the issue of food security.

The definition of food security here is food for all and at all times. The dialogue will address issues of food security specific to Richmond including “food security in schools”, “growing more community gardens”, “100-mile diet”, “developing social enterprises”, and “a food policy for Richmond”. Participants will be asked to identify issues and help develop directions and strategies that address the needs of the Richmond community.

Minoo shared this Kale and White Bean Soup in the Gilmore Park Church Community Kitchen. Minoo told us that she got the recipe from a friend who got it from a chef in a restaurant in Stanley Park after trying it out at the restaurant.

Raisin Banana Bread

Minoo made a Raisin Banana Bread while Zoe was preparing her ingredients for the Vietnamese Shrimp Roll. The Banana Bread recipe is upon the request of Tony. Tony joined the community kitchen with no knowledge of how to cook at all. But for her daughter’s sake, he came to the community kitchen and has learned a lot and he always go back and practices what he learned.
