Orange Poached Pears

For dessert, Minoo prepared Orange Poached Pears.  This dessert is best served chilled.  You may served the Orange Poached Pears with some vanilla ice-cream, leave out the syrups.  The pears can be cut into smaller pieces and serve with your favourite yogurt along with some granolas for breakfast.

This Orange Poached Pears recipe serves 6.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups orange juice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • zest of 1 orange, cut in strips
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 6 ripe but firm pears, peeled, cored, and quartered lengthwise

Instructions

Orange-Poached-Pears-2Twist the orange peel to release it’s oil.  Slice into fine strips.

Orange-Poached-Pears-3In a large saucepan, combine orange juice, water, sugar, zest, cloves, and cinnamon stick.  Add pears and bring to a boil.  Reduce heat; cover and simmer for about 15 minutes, or until pears are tender.  Test tenderness with a knife.
Orange-Poached-Pears-4Remove the pears from the liquid.  Remove cinnamon stick and cloves.
Orange-Poached-Pears-5Place the pot with the liquid back to the stove.  Make a corn starch solution to thicken the syrup until the right consistency.
Orange-Poached-Pears-6Put the pears and the syrup in the refrigerator until thoroughly chilled.  Serve pears with sauce spooned over, garnished with orange zest.
