Arby’s in Bellingham, WA

Oh, did you guys know how long was the border wait last weekend? It was unbelievably long … 3-5 hours south bound. We had been going south for our shopping at least once a month since the Canadian Dollar reached par with the mighty USD. However, we had been somewhat lucky not to be caught up in lineups over 1 hr.

Cascade Pizza in Bellingham, WA

Ever since we had started blogging two years ago, we had never met up with any fellow bloggers. That is not until around the (US) Thanksgiving last year. We had been in contact with Jennifer from Pie Is The New Toast for some time and had agreed to meet up if we are in the Bellingham area. Actually, Jennifer had already blogged on our meet-up here.

Horseshoe Cafe in Bellingham, WA

We had not warmed up to the idea to pay for a Nexus pass. It seems to be a lot of money of which we are not sure if we will use it all year round. So, instead, we would normally drive across the border at an unearthly time, before 6AM usually, just to beat the border lineups. We would have breakfast after we cross the border.

Shari’s in Bellingham

One unique thing about Shari’s restaurant is their unique six sided building design which allows for maximum windows seating. It also allows the quickest path from the centrally located kitchen to the dining tables. I am impressed with the thinking behind the design.

Shopping Jaunts To Washington State

We like the Walmart Supercenter. It’s a great place to pick up non-branded stuff. Their merchandize is not very exciting but at least it is huge and has everything you most likely need. In the Supercenter, they have a full supermarket line and sells also meat, diary product, etc even have a bakery, banks, hair and nail salons … the whole shebang.

IHOP Breakfast in Bellingham, WA

I did some checking on the Bank of Canada exchange rate website and found out a few interesting facts.

  • The lowest all-time rate was 62 cents US to the Canadian Dollar. That was just a short 5.5 years ago. It’s amazing how fast we had reached par.
  • The highest all-time rate was USD$1.06 to CAD$1. That was about 50 years ago. It’s just 4 more cents to hit the all time high. Wow!

Old Country Buffet in Bellingham

With the strong Canadian Dollar these days, everything in the US seems like a bargain. Just a couple of weeks ago, we found cheap airfares from Bellingham to Las Vegas (and Reno). We tried booking tickets from the website but to our dismay, they wanted to charge something like $60 in total for convenience fees. However, if we were to buy the tickets from the ticketing counter in the Bellingham airport, we will save the $60 bucks. So, being so stingy that we are, we decided to take a short drive down Bellingham to get the tickets and at the same time pop by our favourite buffet … the Old Country Buffet at the Bellis Fair Mall.

Lychee Buffet in Bellingham, WA

We had always went to the Old Country Buffet in the Bellis Fair Mall but decided this time to look for another place. We found the Lychee Buffet just off the I-5 at exit 253. The address is 819 Lakeway Drive. Their website is http://lycheebuffet.net.

I have boycotted Tim Horton’s over the timbit issue www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/2008 /05/08/timbit-lilliman.html?re f=rss the fact that the woman had children shouldn’t matter though. I find plain Starbucks coffee tastes burnt so I have to get a vanilla latte to cut the burnt taste.
  • Style Dish on Seattle: The First Starbucks Store: I use to be a frappucino addict and then when I read a grande frapp with whipped cream has the same amount of calories as a big mac…I stopped. I also started to go to the local coffee shops and found good ones like JJ Beans and love Cafe Artigiano. Also Starbucks isn’t doing so well. Maybe it’s the effect of the US economy downturn but in its history, the last 2-3 quarters they’ve started to see a drop in their sales.

I am guess that’s one of the reasons why Starbucks is the king of the hill in the world of coffee. I drink coffee not for waking myself up besides taste, just like most adults. I did the test. I find that Starbucks can last me 4 to 5 hours of high energy. I don’t feel sleepy until night. Other brands? 2 to 3 hours if I am lucky. Usually 1 hour of being awake. I tried to switch before. I failed miserably. I would have a cup of non Starbucks in the morning and then ran to Starbucks for a cup of coffee hours later because I simply couldn’t stay awake. Especially there’s no sunlight during winter in Vancouver,I really need strong coffee to make me sober all day. If anyone knows any brand even stronger than Starbucks, please let me know. I pan fry ‘em in a non-stick like Japanese gyozas so there’s that nice crispy caramelized bottom. I use 5% or more sour cream with some chopped basil and chives mixed in as accompaniment. Mmmmmm.

And since they are Chinese-looking serving Russian/Eastern European food, maybe they are from those areas that are mixed. I had a student from Kazakhstan who looked like kids in Hawai’i that are mixed Asian and white. And do you remember that model Irina Pantaeva? She is from Siberia and looks Asian.
  • Jessica on Seattle: Piroshky, Piroshky in Pike Place Market: Perogies are the best! If you haven’t tried them you have to. Homemade ones are the best but store bought are ok too…just don’t get the cottage cheese kind. You can either boil them or cook them in a frying pan with a touch of butter. Traditionally they are served with sour cream for dipping but salsa goes well with them too. When my mom cooks them she serves them on a plate with diced up tomatoes and onion and a sprinkle of cheddar cheese on top.
