Lamb Hot Pot from Jubilant, Richmond

Polly and I met up after a long break while Ben was away at Atlanta for a week. It was a very cold day with temperature dipped to negative last week.

We went to Jubilant in Richmond for Lamb Hot Pot. Lamb hot pot is only served in fall and winter. It is the perfect dish for cold day.

Look at that succulent piece of meat. Other ingredients in this dish include bean curd sticks, shiitake mushrooms, leeks and lots of ginger. (more…)

Mother’s Day Dinner Celebration at Continental Seafood Restaurant on Cambie Road, Richmond

Lorna invited me to another Mother’s Day Celebration dinner. This time, it’s organized by a church and it also to celebrate the launch of a radio program on AM1470.

The function was held at Continental Seafood Restaurant for 30 tables of guests. What a great turnout.

The first course was a cold cut appetizers comprised of BBQ pork, another version of cold cut meat; deep fried pork ribs and BBQ duck. In the center was jelly fish.

The second dish was Deep Fried Prawns Wrapped in Bean Curd Skin. They were crispy and go well with a sweet chili sauce.

Mother’s Day Lunch at Shiang Garden, Richmond

During the day trip to Lonsdale Quay and lunch at China town, I was invited to join the SUCCESS Women’s Club mother’s day lunch. The ticket was $25 for non-member.

The first course for a multi-course Chinese dinner is often a soup. For this lunch, we had the Fish Maw Soup.

Hing Fung Restaurant in Capstan Way, Richmond

During the meal at Garden Villa Seafood Restaurant, Lorna mentioned of a new Chinese restaurant on Capstan Way. So, I went with Nanzaro during the weekend to check it out.

Apparently, this new Hing Fung Restaurant has taken over the Golden Bauhinia Restaurant which I wrote about just in February.

Roasted-Lamb

This is the dish which Lorna had. I love lamb and this just look mouth watering. Unfortunately, we went there for lunch and I could not find this on the lunch menu. Lorna came here for dinner. Perhaps we’ll come back at dinner time for this.

The meal that we ordered came with drink. I had hot milk tea which was good, strong tea flavour and creamy. Nanzaro had the ice milk tea which came in a sealed plastic cup like those served for bubble tea. It was too sweet for Nanzaro. (more…)

Garden Villa Seafood Restaurant in Chinatown, Vancouver

Lorna invited me for a day trip organized by the SUCCESS Women’s Club to Lonsdale Quay tour follow by lunch in Chinatown.

Here’s the menu for the lunch. It’s a nine course lunch; the last item which was added at the last minute was missing from the menu.

Chinese tea is always served in Chinese restaurant.

The first course was Snake Soup. We had two servings of the it. Snake Soup is a limited time dish offer and I guessed it’s seasonal. Snake Soup is usually served in colder weather as it is believed that the soup warms our body.

The Snake Soup has shiitake mushrooms. bamboo shoots, some shredded meat; I believed not all is snake. It is slightly spicy by itself. The first serving was not hot enough and it did not taste that good. However the second serving was hot enough. I like my soup hot. (more…)

Ben and I were at the Yaohan Foodcourt looking for breakfast.

We settled with Wah Yuen Noodle House for some Hong Kong style breakfast.

Ben had a multi meatballs noodle soup for $6. It came with some seaweed too.

Specialty Chicken & Wonton House at Ackroyd, Richmond

On a weekend lunch, Ben decided to revisit Specialty Chicken & Wonton House for lunch. It’s been more than two years since our visit in 2010.

The parking in this strip mall is very congested especially after Price Smart renovated and expanded.

Ben and I shared a lunch combo for two ($21.80) which comprises of a choice of half a chicken/duck dish, a seasonal vegetable and two bowls of rice. Ben opted for the Hainanese chicken.

The Hainanese chicken was served cold with a gelatinous skin and fat. The chicken skin was bouncy and the meat was firm. (more…)

Golden Bauhinia Restaurant in Capstan Way, Richmond

When Nanzaro and I had lunch at Fatty Hi Restaurant, we took note of restaurants in Capstan Way that are new to us. New in the sense that we have not eaten there before; not recently opened.

One of the restaurant we wanted to check out is Golden Bauhinia Restaurant. The last time we dined at this location was when it was Ho Yuen Restaurant. What I remembered about Ho Yuen was the large poster of the owners on the front glass wall.

The server told me that Golden Bauhinia has been in business for more than a year already.

The restaurant is quite big; it covers two shop lots.

Golden Bauhinia is a very typical Chinese/Hong Kong style restaurant with specials pasted on the wall.

I ordered the Braised Bean Curd Skin Ball & Enoki from the recommendation of the server. This dish comes with a bowl rice. It is $6.95. (more…)

Finally, Got to try [CRA 2010 Signature Dish] Lamb Hotpot 羊腩煲 from Excelsior Restaurant, Richmond

When we came to Excelsior last year in July to try their CRA award wining dish, lamb hotpot, we were disappointed because we were told that they only serve that dish in winter.

So, in this winter, I make sure that I come to Excelsior to try the Bamboo Lamb Hotpot. I came with Lorna to celebrate her belated birthday. Lorna told me that Excelsior has been around for a long time, more than 20 years. Lorna is an old timer here. She’s been here for more than 30 years.

We arrived just before 12pm on a week day. It was not busy at that time but customers started to trickle in soon. Most were middle aged customers. I guess they are all loyal customers who have been patronizing this restaurant. At the far end where the cashier is, you can see the CRA award being hang on the wall.

There are lunch combos range from $6 to below $10 being served during lunch hour. You can click on the menu to have a larger view.  We already know what we want, so we just ignored the lunch combo menu.

The Lamb Hotpot was written on a board on the wall. I noticed that the price has gone up since last year. When we visited last year, the menu price was $18.80 but now it was $23.88. (more…)
