Alleluia Cafe, Richmond Central

Ben suggested to go to Alleluia Cafe for dinner on a Saturday as we have not been back to this restaurant for a long while.

Ben recommended the Stewed Lamb in Russian Spicy Sauce for me as he knows that I love lamb. This is $8.95.

Some of the lamb pieces were bone in. The sauce is a tomato base sauce with very little hint of spiciness. Not my preference of taste. Perhaps, I should have pick the lamb curry. The lamb were tender though.

The meal came with a drink as a feature of HongKong style cafe. I had hot milk tea while the rest of the family had ice milk tea. (more…)

Dinner at Lido Restaurant

Nanzaro needed something light for dinner before his run the next morning. He had carbo-loaded himself with Salted Fish and Chicken Fried Rice from the Richmond Public Market at lunch.

We tried our luck at the parking lot where Lido is and luck was with us. The wait for a table was just a few minutes. It must be our lucky day.

We opted for the large Claypot Rice with a combination of salted fish with minced pork and chicken with mushroom.

It was a very large serving; definitely good for at least 3 people.

The best part of the claypot rice; the crust. (more…)

The One Cafe on No. 3 Road

Ben wanted Hong Kong style cuisine for dinner. It’s been a long while since we last visited The One across the Brighouse skytrain station simply because of it’s very limited parking.

Ben, Arkensen and I shared two dishes since Arkensen was not really hungry. One of the dishes which Ben ordered was Curry Lamb with rice. It was kind of weird to have lamb slices for curry. I always associate curry with chunks of meat and not meat in thin slices. The lamb flavour was not pronounced, perhaps over powered by the spices in the curry.

Since Arkensen likes baked rice, Ben ordered a Baked Portuguese Chicken on Rice. This was sweetish with a strong coconut flavour. There were tomatoes and onions in the curry with chunks of boneless chicken. Arkensen was surprised that this was served with steam rice on the side and not with fried rice under the curry. (more…)

Farewell Dinner for Ben at Happy Date Bakery & Restaurant on Park Road

Ben had to travel for one last time to Beijing. Ben wanted to get some Bak Kut Teh spice packs for one of his colleague in Beijing. I remembered Great One Supermarket has it and since we were in that strip mall, we had dinner at Happy Date Bakery & Restaurant for convenience.

Nanzaro ordered a Fried Rice Noodle Malaysian/Singaporean style. It was a large serving for $10.80.

Arkensen ordered a Baked Seafood Rice. It was another big serving. This is $11.80. Both Arkensen and Nanzaro had to pack their leftovers to go.

Arkensen’s order came with a bun and drink. Since Arkensen ordered a cold drink, there is an extra 50cents charge. (more…)

Excelsior Restaurant, Brighouse Square, Richmond

Ben and I went out for an early dinner so that I can watch the Golden Globe Awards broadcast. Our boys wanted McDonalds take-out instead of going out for dinner with us.010

It was a cold rainy evening and we just wanted something with soup. We stopped at the Brighouse Square to check out the restaurants there. We had a choice of having beef noodle at Shanghai House Restaurant or noodle combos of our choice at Excelsior Restaurant. We settled at Excelsior Restaurant.

I ordered the noodle combos for $8.95. My choice of soup base was Gingko and pepper soup which turned out very peppery. We enjoyed the heat of the pepper especially in a cold rainy day.

My choice of two toppings were pork balls and fish fillet. Other ingredients included in the combos were fresh bean curd, button mushrooms and suey choy.

My choice of noodle was egg noodle which turned out to be the noodle used for wonton noodle (“sung mien” in Cantonese). (more…)

Redbud Restaurant on Granville Ave, Richmond

Nanzaro missed to go out for lunch with us because he wanted to catch a hockey game at home. So, he insisted on going out for dinner even Ben and I did not feel like having dinner as we were still full from our lunch.

We brought Nanzaro to Redbud Restaurant on Granville since he told us that he wanted fried rice.

Redbud Restaurant is a Hong Kong style restaurant. It was pretty quiet with just a few tables occupied on a Saturday night. Perhaps, it was due to the rainy weather where people prefer to stay at home.

There were quite a few fried rice options on the menu. Nanzaro had a hard time deciding what to get. Finally, he settled with the spicy XO sauce beef fried rice. He enjoyed it because it had a slight kick to it from the spicy XO sauce.

This fried rice was $12.99 (slightly pricey) but with a good size. (more…)

Double Double Restaurant in Empire Centre, Richmond

Double Double Restaurant had opened for a while but it’s always a line-up.

016This time, we decided to wait no matter what. We were there just before noon and our wait was about 30 minutes and we had to share table with others. Besides the wait for the restaurant, parking is also another problem in this strip mall.

The restaurant was very busy and noisy as predicted.

The first impression was not so good as you can see that our utensil was not clean.

I ordered a sweet Chinese donut and a savory fried pancake to try as these remind me of my childhood. They are popular breakfast items in Malaysia’s morning market. The donut and pancake are huge. (more…)

Farewell Dinner on the Eve of Kam Do’s Closing for Renovation

When Ben told me that Kam Do Restaurant & Bakery was closing, I was shocked. How could a restaurant that is so busy be closing. Apparently, it is just closing for renovation. Whew!

So, we decided to have Ben’s farewell dinner at Kam Do on the eve of it’s closing before Ben headed to YVR for his flight back to Beijing.

The server told us that Kam Do will reopen before Christmas.

The paintings on the left photo were the artwork of Lorna’s (my community kitchen buddy) late husband. I wonder what will happen to them.

I wonder if Kam Do will change their menu after the renovation. Arkensen commented that why change something that is working. (more…)

ABC HK Cafe in Aberdeen Center, Richmond

Ben and I wanted to go to Lido for lunch but the parking was full, as usual. So, we ended up going to Aberdeen Center. While exploring where to eat, we noticed that Northern Delicacy was closed with a note on the door stating the closure was due to failure to pay rent. So sad.

We decided to try ABC HK Cafe since we have not try this place before. The previous occupant, 7th Heaven Cafe was a HK style restaurant too.

The restaurant is spacious.

The views from the restaurant.

I ordered a Lamb Hotpot as I was craving for it especially in the cold winter. The lamb was a bit tough. It was a big pot and we ended up packing quite a lot of the leftover home. (more…)

Golden Bauhinia Restaurant in Capstan Way, Richmond

When Nanzaro and I had lunch at Fatty Hi Restaurant, we took note of restaurants in Capstan Way that are new to us. New in the sense that we have not eaten there before; not recently opened.

One of the restaurant we wanted to check out is Golden Bauhinia Restaurant. The last time we dined at this location was when it was Ho Yuen Restaurant. What I remembered about Ho Yuen was the large poster of the owners on the front glass wall.

The server told me that Golden Bauhinia has been in business for more than a year already.

The restaurant is quite big; it covers two shop lots.

Golden Bauhinia is a very typical Chinese/Hong Kong style restaurant with specials pasted on the wall.

I ordered the Braised Bean Curd Skin Ball & Enoki from the recommendation of the server. This dish comes with a bowl rice. It is $6.95. (more…)
