TUC Craft Kitchen on West Cordova St., Vancouver

Polly, Whitney and I went out for dinner in downtown Vancouver on a spring week day. It was nice to go out in the evening when the sky is still bright.

Whitney made reservation at TUC Craft Kitchen at 6:15PM. Unfortunately, Polly arrived late due to her meeting at work. So, Whitney called to postpone our reservation twice from 6:15PM to 6:45PM and then to 7:00PM. On the second call, the restaurant told her that normally they do not allow that but just for this time.

When we arrived, the restaurant was not busy at all. I guessed they allow us to postpone of our reservation because of that.

We started off with some appetizers which are good for sharing. The above is Parsnip Fries. They were match sticks size and very crunchy.

The next appetizer was their signature dish Pork Belly Crackling. It is served with a star anise red wine reduction. They were deep fried; very crunchy on the outside and melt in your mouth when biting into it with some sinful pork fat oozing into the mouth.  Luckily, it is just a small portion for the three of us to share. Simply can’t have too much of these. (more…)

Boston Restaurant on Victoria Dr., Vancouver

Ben and I went to Vancouver for our morning walk. We parked along Victoria Dr. and walked along it to look for a place for breakfast.

IMG_7356

We came across the above Boston Restaurant which was opened early. We were there just after 8:00AM. This is a Hong Kong style restaurant.

IMG_7343

The restaurant is nice, with nice lighting, even a chandelier. Each table has a Chinese news paper on it for the patrons.

I ordered French Toast for $6.95. (more…)

Cafe Mai Mai & Pho on Granville St., Vancouver

Ben and I went out for lunch after our morning walk on a Saturday.

IMG_7128

Ben drove to Granville St., with the intention to have lunch at one of the restaurants along the that street. We ended checking out Pho Mai Mai as it was rainy day and a bowl of noodle soup will be heart warming.

IMG_7126

The restaurant was pretty quiet when we arrived. Just simple seating arrangement, nothing fancy.

IMG_7121

We shared two items. A pho which came with raw beef. The soup was flavourful and the server told Ben that their dishes were MSG free. (more…)

Hapa Izakaya on West Cordova Street, Vancouver

Polly, Whitney and I met up for a ladies get together in downtown sometime in the middle of January. It’s been a month since we last met.

IMG_6906

Whitney suggested either Cincin or Hapa Izakaya. I chose Hapa Izakaya which I have not blog before.

IMG_6893

We arrived around 5:00PM. The restaurant was not too busy yet.

IMG_6892

Our server told us it’s still happy hour time with a smaller menu. You can click on the menu to have a larger view.

IMG_6896

We ordered a few items from the happy hour menu to start with. The above is Ika Okonomiyaki Bites, which is lightly fried “Japanese pancake” with wasabi-mayonnaise dipping sauce. This pancake bites were more doughy than the original okonomiyaki which I had eaten before. The original version will have a lot of cabbage. (more…)

The Place Restaurant on Granville St., Vancouver

Ben wanted the family hot pot for lunch. We had this Shanghainese dish at The Place Restaurant on Granville Street a while ago.

IMG_6526

It looks like The Place Restaurant has changed into a Sichuan Restaurant.

IMG_6524

The restaurant has a fresh coat of paint but the tables and chairs still look the same; especially the chair covers.

The menu has some photos of the dishes. (more…)

Stepho’s Souvlaki Greek Taverna on Davie St., Vancouver

Ben and I went for a walk at the north side of the False Creek on a gloomy Saturday morning. It drizzled before we started the walk and we were glad that we did not give up and continued with our walk. We walked 20,000 steps that morning.

After the walk, Ben rewarded me with a good lunch. He brought me to Stephos. Since it was still 5 minutes before the restaurant opened for lunch, there was only one group of about 10 in line.

Ben ordered Humous for our appetizer. It was garlicky.

20151108_114117

The humous came with three pillowy pita bread. The hummus and pita bread can be a meal by itself. (more…)
