Goodbye: From chowtimes.com to chezsuanne.wordpress.com

Hi All:

It had been a good run. All good things must come to an end.

You see, there is a reason why I had been harping on the word Chez Suanne the last little while. I like to introduce to you our new adventure:

ChezSuanne-600x218

Yeah, it is our new food blog. This is all exciting for us as we bring the blog to the next level. Frankly after more than five years writing about restaurants, we are already bored stiff. Time to move on to new and exciting stuff. Our new URL is http://chezsuanne.wordpress.com

Here is another good news for us too. You see, we had been approached to sell chowtimes.com along with all the 2170 posts in it. Sorry, your comments (21,427 comments) goes along with the deal too. It was a deal we cannot refuse. Now you know why I had removed the chowtimes.com logo from this blog header a couple of weeks ago. Going forward chowtimes.com will no longer be about the food adventures of Ben and Suanne.

The good news is that chowtimes.com will continue to be about food adventures. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you all to the new blogger of chowtimes.com …  Continue reading

Meat Glue

Someone sent me a link to a video about Meat Glue and the application of it in the food industry.

Having never heard of it before, I was certainly intrigued by it. Here watch this:

I did a search on Wikipedia to find out more. Meat Glue has a sexier name. It is called Transglutaminase. Apparently this is not new. Meat Glue had been discovered since … Continue reading

Szechuan Delicious Restaurant: New Restaurant in Incubation

Crispy Lechon beat me to it. 🙂

On the way out for breakfast today, we saw that JJ Shanghai had closed shop. In its place is a new restaurant called the Szechuan Delicious Restaurant.

Szechuan-Delicious-Restaurant-Richmond-1000

Some of you know that this location above as the incubator of some of the best restaurants in Richmond. This small lot right across from the Richmond Center on No 3 Road is where Chen’s Shanghai and Danny’s Wun Tun had the their humble beginnings. I can’t remember who else started off from here although I remember it being discussed at length on chowtimes before. Shanghai River too right? Can someone help jog our memory?

A lot of previous tenants here ended up moving to bigger and better locations. The tenant before this was JJ Shanghai. JJ bucked the trend and did not fare quite well. I was surprised that they survive as long as they did.

Let’s see if Szechuan Delicious will incubate to something big. They are opened for business just today. Their prices are so-so and comparable to other Szechuan restaurants in Richmond. If we have space in our stomachs for a full dinner tonight and I can convince the boys to go out for dinner, we might just take one for the team.

Here is their menu. You can click on it to show larger:

Day Old Bread vs Lido’s $1.45 Pineapple Bun

Every now and then I experiment with different ways of blogging. I like to see what works and what doesn’t. So today you are going to see a few of what I call “mini posts”.

I am trying to see if I could blog on-the-go from the iPhone about things I thought you might be interested in. Such mini posts are about topics which does not need full posts and are random in nature. Let me know what you think.

Anyway, after the Pineapple Bun with Satay Beef in Lido today, we walked past a bakery just a few doors away. The bakery is called Regent Bakery. We went in because we saw that they also have the Pineapple Buns and wanted to see how much it is.

Lido’s Pineapple Buns are not cheap ($1.45) although it is a hit with their customers. Suanne and I like Lido’s Pineapple Buns a lot.

Regent Bakery had two sizes of Pineapple Buns. They are much cheaper. The small ones are $1.20 for two and the much bigger ones are just $1.00.

We did not buy that but instead we were drawn to the “Day Old Bread”. LOL! This packet of 6 buns which included one large Pineapple Bun and two small Pineapple Buns is just $2.00.

My Breakfast: Pineapple Bun Burger In Lido

Am having breakfast in Lido with Suanne. I ordered a new thing today. It is called Pineapple Bun with Satay Beef.

Pineapple Bun Burger

It is $4.75 with a beverage. Effectively this is a Pineapple Bun burger. Too moist and soft. So you can’t pick it up with your hand.

Verdict: Better stick with the plain old Pineapple Bun. Don’t mess with simple goodness.

Happy New Year of the Rabbit!
