Fisherman’s Terrace Restaurant in Aberdeen Centre in Richmond

Fisherman’s Terrace Restaurant was really busy, perhaps due to Christmas and year end celebration. We had to wait quite a while even though we had reservation.

Something different about this restaurant is that their teapot has the label of the tea on the teapot. There is one disadvantage for non-Chinese reader eating here as the menu is only in Chinese. We have to order from the menu and not from a cart.

Allie’s Farewell Lunch at Tropika in Richmond

So Allie had decided that her last day in beautiful Vancouver would be Christmas Eve. Helen and I promised to treat Allie to a farewell lunch before she leave for Korea. I wanted to introduce to her Malaysian food which she had never tried before. We went to the Tropika Restaurant in Aberdeen Centre in Richmond. Tropika is a chain of Malaysian cuisine restaurants in Vancouver.

I ordered the Malay Curry Fish Head Hot Pot. This is a curry dish with fish head, long beans, eggplant and tofu puff. It is very rich and creamy. The gravy goes best with steam rice. Helen was afraid to eat try the fish head but she liked the gravy. I know, not many people can stand the thought of eating a giant fish head. Allie liked it though. This dish costs $14.95.

Allie wanted a chicken dish. So, we recommended Hainanese Chicken and ordered half a chicken. Allie liked this a lot especially with the pounded ginger. Allie told us she never has this type of chicken before. In Korea, chicken is usually fried or baked. This dish costs $12.95. (more…)

Le BonBon Cafe in Richmond

This is our fourth cake meet. Polly and I had to postpone last week’s cake meet due to the snow storm and deep freeze.

This time, we visited Le BonBon Cafe in Richmond. It is located at 170 – 3031 Beckman Place which is on Bridgeport Rd and No. 4 Rd.

Le BonBon Cafe offers a number of cheesecakes and gourmet coffee. It also caters for birthday cakes for kids like ice-cream cake and mud cake such as Portuguese Creme Caramel, sponge cake in various flavour like chocolate, vanilla, coffee and lemon, butter cake and banana cake.

Le BonBon’s cheesecake is all homemade by the owner, Jenny Felgar. Le BonBon’s cheesecake is famous for its rich and intense cheese flavor, yet smooth but not too sweet. Jenny told us that she uses 1 kilogram of cream cheese to make a 9″ cheesecake and it takes 13.5 to 15 hours to make one from preparation to its readiness. Each cheesecake is slowly baked to its perfection with passion and dedication.

We were overwhelmed by the varieties in the display shelves. To name some, Le BonBon’s original. Blueberry Swirl, Strawberry Swirl, Chocolate Truffle, Bailey’s Coffee, Italian Tiramisu, Green Tea, Green Apple, Mango, Pear, etc.

Jenny recommended we try the Le BonBon’s original cheesecake which is the New York Style cheesecake as it gives us the original cheese flavour. It is indeed very rich and creamy.

Ellie Tropical Cuisine in Richmond

Update 26-Apr-2009: Ellie had closed. Seems like this place will re-open as a vegetarian place.

Saturday came around again. Suanne does not cook on weekends. She always insisted it’s her day off. This time we decided to check out one of the Malaysian-slash-Taiwanese “cuisine” restaurants in Richmond.

No, no … Ellie is not one of those fusion restaurants. When they say that they are a Malaysian-Taiwanese restaurant, it’s just that they serve food from both Malaysia and Taiwan (beef noodles). Anyway, it’s located at 3779 Sexsmith Road in Richmond.

We stuck with the simple Malaysian food this visit. Nanzaro is addicted to fried rice. You know, everytime he gets the menu in the restaurant, he will flip the pages and scan if they have fried rice on it.

He ordered a Belacan Fried Rice. The belacan gives a distinctive pungent smell and taste to the rice. It was pretty good, I must say. Cost: $8.95.

Kamloops Trip: Kam Do Restaurant and Bakery – Breakfast

We made an overnight trip to Kamloops last month to see the Salmon Run. We wanted to start as early as possible so that we can be in Kamloops in early afternoon.

There were limited places available for breakfast at that early hour. I think it was about seven in the morning. The morning was uncharacteristically foggy in Richmond. Kind of eerie driving down No 3 Rd, I must say.

OK, of late we have been crazy over HK style cafes because of the delicious and plentiful food for under $10. Nanzaro and Arkensen, for some reason, dislikes HK style cafes, in particular Kam Do which Suanne and I loves. Anyway, it was my choice this week — we went to Kam Do for breakfast since we had never tried their breakfast menu.

We had blogged about Kam Do twice (here and here) before.

The table setting is downright simple and efficient. The cutlery came in a basket and left for us to set it up.

I ordered from the Big Bowl Breakfast menu ($6.85). On hindsight I should not have ordered this as this is too much food for me. It came with a bowl of spaghetti and BBQ pork in clear soup.

Nanzaro ordered from the Good Morning Breakfast Special menu ($5.25). He selected the …Rice Noodles and Pork Meat in Soup as the main dish.

Simply Vegetarian in Richmond

Update 07-Dec-2010: This restaurant is closed. Must have been closed for a while already.

We bumped into Steven a couple of months ago in Chapters. Steven used to work with Ben. To our surprise, Steven knows about chowtimes and being a vegetarian, he invited us to try out vegetarian food. We had never visited a vegetarian restaurant before and quickly accepted his invite.

Steven brought us to a restaurant called Simply Vegetarian on Akroyd in Richmond.

With Steven’s recommendation, Ben ordered a combo meal for $6.95. The combo meal comes with a miso soup.

Ben ordered this 3 cups of Treasure which is veggie meat made from soy bean starch cooked in ginger, basil, peanut and satay sauce. We were surprised by the taste of the dish which is pretty good.

Alleluia Cafe in Richmond

We dined out at Alleluia Cafe in Richmond a few weeks ago. This was from a recommendation from Polly who told us how they enjoyed discounts at the cafe because the owner of this place worships in the same church. We did not know where it was until Ben came across the small-ish sign along Westminster Hwy (northside between No 3 Rd and Buswell St).

Alleluia Cafe is a another HongKong style cafe which we have recently loved to dine in. The cafe was very busy and we had to wait for 10 minutes before we got a table. Unlike a the other HK-style cafes, the decor in this place is much more contemporary and nicer.

Vietnamese Sub from Hue Cafe in Richmond

I’m off to catch a flight to Singapore. The flight is in the afternoon and I have not have a confirmed ticket yet. Calling the reservation office yesterday, they told me I should have no problem getting a seat on the flight but I need to be there as soon as the checkin counter opens to get onto the wait list.

The family wanted to see me off at the airport. So, we decided grab something to eat at the airport while waiting for my flight to be confirmed. There’s this new Hue Cafe little shop we notice along No 3 Road each time we drive past the Richmond Center. We would not have given that place a second thought if not for the big sign that reads “Vietnamese Sub: 4 for $10”. It was just what we wanted — sandwiches to-go for the airport.

They have dark windows and you could barely see the insides. However, when we got in we were pleasantly surprised how clean and tastefully decorated they were. It’s much better than the many Vietnamese restaurants we frequented.

They have limited menu — primarily subs and pho. The prices were very cheap too. Their pho is only about $4.50 each. We ordered the 4 subs for $10 and decided to choose different types. We chose pork, chicken, beef and meatballs.

Kam Do Restaurant (2nd Visit)

It was a tough choice deciding where to eat out last weekend. While we wanted to find a new place to blog about but we all so wanted to make a repeat visit to the Kam Do Restaurant. We blogged about Kam Do about a month ago.

It was a bit more crowded this time. We had to wait for 15 minutes for a table. It seems like the wait was because we arrived just at about 11:30 am where they changed their breakfast menu to the lunch menu.

We ordered three separate dishes to share among the four of us. Suanne ordered the “Kam Do Premium Set Menu”. The Premium Set Menu costs $9.98 and for that she gets the following:

  • A garlic toast (we opted for the soft bun)
  • Chef’s Special Soup, which is a tomato/vegetable soup
  • A choice of two sides (we chose the smoked salmon and cod fillet cutlet)
  • A main dish (we chose the Baked Portoguese Clam and Crab Meat with Spaghetti)
  • Milk Tea

The soup Chef’s Special Soup was just right. We prefer soup to be watery, not thick. The bowl was large and frankly, the soup itself is enough for me for a meal.

The bun served was the chinese style bun which is much more soft, fluffy and airy. It is sweet and goes very well with the Margarine.
