Easy, Vegan Chocolate Cake

We made an Easy, Low-fat Chocolate Cake in the South Arm Community Kitchen for dessert.

The flavour of orange complements the chocolate cake well.


  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup brewed coffee or cold water
  • zest from 1 orange

Preheat oven to 350F.

Mix flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda and salt into a large bowl.

Make 3 depressions in the dry ingredients.

Pour oil in one, vinegar in one and vanilla in the last depression.

Zest an orange over the dry ingredients.
Pour water or coffee over the dry ingredients.
Fold with a spatula to mix the dry and wet ingredients. Do not over mix.
Pour the batter into an 8×8 inches glass baking pan which has been buttered and floured.
Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

Let the cake cool on a rack.

Dust with icing sugar if desired.
